Southern Highlands Reader's Home

Oh to call this home! The serene space actually belongs to my reader Ali, who lives in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales (about 2 hours south of Sydney). Ali is a stay-at-home mom of 3 little ones (in addition to being an aspiring designer!) who is obsessed with the bluey/greeny/grey colors we all can't get enough of. They recently built the home of their dreams in the country, but sadly have to move back to the city for a wider choice of schools for their son with Aspergers Syndrome. Gosh, I wish I lived in Australia right about now because their home is now up for sale. To see the listing and for more photos, just head here!

And with that, I wish you all a fantastic Halloween weekend!!! Be safe!

Cute Colorful Cottage

How cute is this cottage in Greensboro, North Carolina that was featured in Canadian Home and Country?! The 1939 Cape belongs to photographer Stacey Haines (a fellow turquoise lover) and her husband Steve, who renovated the space for less than $2,300. So many of the lovely items you see come from flea markets, yard sales and thrift stores, and they did all the work themselves. I know you all love that bedroom...it's just enough color that they only painted the one wall. Talk about pure heaven paired with all the white! Read more about this charming space here!

Now we need to know about the various hardwood floorings available in the market.

The original form of hardwood flooring is the solid wood where strips, parquets and planks of solid wood are available. But laying them is a tough job and there is no chance that you can do it yourself. It is very hardy and if maintained with just a little bit of care, it can last generations.

But people avoid original hardwood flooring because of its cost and difficulty in laying. So they go for engineered wood. Engineered wood is wood and not wood at the same time. It is layers of wood veneer fused together. Good quality wood and bad quality wood are used in manufacture of this material and hence the lower cost. Other advantages are that you can get many designs and textures and these floorings are especially engineered to withstand different weather conditions, chemicals, temperatures and humidity.

Among the toughest of the engineered hardwood floors are the ones where planks of hardwood are given an acrylic coating. This coating makes them resistance to scratches. So the surface stays intact for a long time. So this flooring is very useful for areas with high footfall. Hardwood flooring is also available in two types – the pre-finished and unfinished types. The pre-finished type of hardwood flooring is easy to lay and you can even do it yourself with proper tools.

Diamond and Baratta

If anyone knows how to make a strong statement with turquoise, hands down it's Diamond and Baratta. I've shown you the vibrant home from the first image before (how could you forget it?), but I just came across the foyer and had to share it too. That chandelier made my heart stop! The other entrance I found on Absolutely Beautiful Things is from another Florida home designed by these two color geniuses. Granted we might not want to live in either home, but how fun to look at or visit. You just have to hand it to these guys for taking such bold risks!

A Japanese garden is not your ordinary garden

Japanese gardening is very different from Western-style garden. Most would say that a Japanese garden is much softer than the soul and inspires meditation. Japanese gardening is a cultural form of gardening that aims to produce a scene that mimics nature as much as possible. The use of trees, shrubs, rocks, sand, artificial hills, ponds, running water and the garden is an art form. Zen and Shinto traditions are both a big part of Japanese gardening and, therefore, the gardens have a contemplative and representative of the spirit.
The basic methods of the landscape is a reduced scale, symbolization, and borrowed views. scale is the art of the real scene of nature, mountains, rivers, trees, and is played on a smaller scale. Symbolism associated with the generalization and abstraction. An example of this would suggest using white sand of the sea. Borrowed views to artists who are using something like the sea or the forest in the background, but ended up becoming an important part of the scene. There are two types of Japanese gardens. Tsukiyama garden is a hill garden and mainly consists of rolling hills and lakes. Hiraniwa, which is the exact opposite Tsukiyama garden is flat, without hills or ponds. The basic elements used in the Japanese garden are stones, gravel, water, moss, rocks, fences and hedges. Rocks used for centerpieces, and that the presence of spirituality to the garden. According to Shinto tradition, the stone reflects the nature spirits.

John Willey...and Your Help!

"Life's too short for an all-beige room." I couldn't agree more with John Willey of Willey Design LLC who designed this amazing Hamptons home featured in this month's issue of East Coast Home + Design and photographed by David Jacquot. I love the personality of the entire space...it's sophisticated, but fun-loving and comfy too. You really can't go wrong with Mother Nature's beachy color palette, sunshine and all!

If you guys were reading along a year ago, you may remember last November Chris and I actually took a trip out east to the Hamptons and NYC. You guys gave us so many fantastic ideas of what to see and where to go, we had such a blast. Well we've decided to return again this year, but for 10 days. So in a few short weeks that's where I'll be! You don't even know how excited I am. I just have to ask you guys again, since I have a lot of new readers now, do you have any recommendations?? Where to stay, eat, play, etc? We're hoping to spend 5 days on Long Island around the Hamptons (with a car), and 5 in Manhattan (with good shoes). Plenty of time to see and do a whole lot! Thanks in advance you guys, I can't wait to hear what you have to say! Oh and if you want to email me any advice too, please feel free! :) THANK YOU!

Take control of clutter in your home

How much time do you spend looking for things around your house? Im not talking about once you go deep into your basement in search of the tent, you nephew wants to borrow next weekend. I talk about you. Your stuff. Let be honest here, ok? If I told you to leave the house now, would you be able to retrieve your keys and wallet in the process? Or do you want to look after them? How is it in the morning at home before work and school? Is there a shoe lost, lost homework pages in search of ... where did you say? ... I was not the last thing you did! ... Hurry, we need to get started! ... I do not know where he is!
If this sounds like your house, then you may have a problem of confusion. The disorder is what kind of things found around your home. This trick is how to do things. Youre probably familiar with the adage "A place for everything and everything in its place." I think when we were kids, our parents and repeated the phrase, focused in the second half: of things! As with adults, however, the flowers the size of ours does not have a definite place appropriate to ask our business. When we do not know where to put something, we end up anywhere. We lair of the road or leave it until we decide. We put things on a temporary basis and a plan to reach them later. But later it can not happen until a bill is due, and then we are desperately searching through the rooms looking for a particular piece of paper. This is a fun way to be.
Get rid of clutter is an issue decisions. First you have to embrace the idea that you want to get under control. Then you have to make a choice, one by one, all the waste at home. The options are: 1) to throw away 2) Give away (or sell) 3) Hold, but only if you are willing to find a permanent home in the house. By placing these same decisions, sometimes not so easy. If you have any difficulties, please do not belittle yourself. On the contrary, invite a friend for support - and maybe to do with stuff, or maybe just a cup of coffee and keep you laughing (or crying). subject to adequate housing is a container or on a shelf. There is nothing to be stored directly on the floor. You may need to install new shelves and invest more in containers. Its ok. The tank can be made of plastic shoe box, but it could also be a box of thin wood.

Bring the Seaside Inside

If there's one thing we can all agree on (since we love turquoise and all) it's that we all appreciate homes with a coastal vibe, like this stunner designed by Massucco Warner Miller. Whether you're steps away from the beach, or landlocked smack dab in the middle of flyover land like me, bringing just a little seaside inside is always a good thing! The colors here are glorious...all the browns, blues and greens, so natural and fresh. I especially love the collection of blue vessels in the last picture! You must see see more of the lovely home here!

Speaking of coastal decor, the Outer Banks Trading Group, one of my sponsors, is filled to the brim with the chicest coastal accents I've ever seen.
